Sidney’s Backyard is our serene digital garden where likeminded creators can connect and share.
BACKYARD Magazine publishes ambitious poetry and visual work that is experimental, risk-taking, and expressive.
We are interested in work that take form seriously, whether through language, structure, or visual composition. Design is central to our magazine. Typography, layout, spacing, and image are treated as part of the editorial process, not embellishment. We accept work that breaks from the norm in other ways too: punctuation, method, imagery, style, meaning. We seek out those who are unwilling to conform to normality, those with the determination to take risks or see things in a new way.We value ambition over polish and raw power over surface finish. We publish work that makes a clear break from the norm, and we are not interested in vagueness posing as depth or aesthetic without purpose.
We welcome submissions from any poet writing in English. Young and emerging poets are especially encouraged to submit. Please send up to 3 poems, or 2 pieces of prose, not exceeding a total of 10 pages, in a single document (.PDF or .DOCX format only). We only accept unpublished work. Simultaneous submissions are allowed, but we ask that you notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere.Submit images in .PNG or .JPG format, with a limit of 5 images per submission. We do not offer payment at this time. Selection is highly competitive, and we aim to publish only a small number of pieces that resonate deeply with our editorial vision. All submissions are read blind. Do not include your name or identifying details in the poem document itself. Include that information only in your cover letter, which may also include a brief bio or publication history (optional). Please expect a response by July 12th. We kindly ask that you refrain from inquiring about your submission status before then.We look forward to reading your work.
